Smart put condos (built by Concord Pacific) into the Downtown Eastside – almost next door to the No5 Orange stripper bar (strangely missed from the list of local amenities in the promotional materials). Designed by Busby Perkins + Will it has 90 condos over retail that replaced what was, for many years, a parking lot.

James K M Cheng designed this hotel and 300 unit condo tower with a wedge shaped design to avoid the viewcone that cuts through the site. At 61 storeys it’s the tallest in town so far (there’s one going up with more floors but fractionally less height across the street). The regularly changing outdoor art display on West Georgia Street is generally worth checking out.
Before the tower there were very modest commercial buildings including the Downtown home (at the time) of Sleep Country Canada.

Garage was built in 2009 and is one of four building restored and added to by Acton Ostry Architects for the Salient Group on Water Street. Garage was the youngest of the buildings, designed by McCarter & Nairne and used initially as the Nagle Brothers Garage. It was developed by Ed Baynes of builders Baynes and Horie, and was probably the city’s first parking garage. The redevelopment added three extra residential storeys, with a clear delineation of the original cornice.
